A few years ago I received Shai Linne's album "The Attributes of God" as a gift and the tracks have lived in my iTunes ever since. I love how Shai dives deep into Christian doctrine and brings up solid, practical theology that lands in your living room... using the artistic medium of hip hop.
For example, the expression "God is good all the time- no intervals" turns up in our conversations often. And just this morning when I read some ghastly headlines in our newspaper that made my heart feel panicked and lost, I thought of the lyric that describes those who mock the almighty God and try to destroy his image bearers: "like a kid with a super soaker trying to conquer Spain." In our groaning and tearful longing to see God's will done on earth as it is in heaven, we need to think deeply on the unchanging attributes of God because truth about him is the ballast our soul needs in the waves. "Look. Our God is in the heavens and he does all that he pleases. He's established his King in Zion and his name is Jesus!"
Of all the tracks on this album there is one that is far and away a "family favorite" because the majority vote is swayed by our two little girls. They like to pick out lyrics from lots of different tracks and talk about them, but I can't tell you how many times they've asked to hear "The Perfection of Beauty." The music is ethereal and the lyrics are methodical, deliberate, and profound-- a tempo and depth that really engages their young minds and hearts. And prompts their sincere questions! How I have loved parsing lyrics like these with my daughters...
- "Sin blinding us to You, the only objective beauty that's truly absolute"
- "Each attribute working harmoniously"
- "You sent Your Beloved to be lifted up on a beautiful, seemingly ugly cross"
- "Beauty residing in the eye of the beholder is a lie. It is found in the Beautiful One-- the Most High."
As soon as we realized that there was a video to go along with this track they began asking to watch "the beautiful princess who talks about God's beauty." Check out "The Perfection of Beauty" from Shai Linne's album "The Attributes of God," performed by his talented wife, Blair Linne.
